How long have you been in business?
We started our business officially in January of 2008. Before then we were professional graphic designers with formal training in photography, and at that time photography was just a much-loved hobby (and the formal training we took was just for fun because we loved it!!). We’ve both had professional grade cameras since a young age and loved using them but had no idea what lay in store or that a new full-time career was waiting to jump on us. We realized where our true calling was after seeing Bobbi+Mike work their magic at our wedding. The jump from design to photography was such an easy one, much easier than we thought it would be, and we are so overwhelmed with the response we’ve gotten for our work and the awesome couples (and their friends and families) we’ve had the joy of working with!! We’ve also made some amazingly awesome friends in the wedding industry, and love networking, sharing ideas, learning from others and helping other photographers in their business!
We believe that no one ever stops learning and we’re always on the lookout for something new and exciting to try out. ![]()
Describe your style?
We have a photojournalistic approach to wedding photography We rarely direct our clients, except for formals and portrait sessions, and try to have the images as little camera-aware (looking straight at the camera) as possible. I would say we try to give a ‘realistic fairy-tale look’ with vivid color and supple b&w’s but nothing over-worked. Because of our focus on candid images rather than formals, we shoot A LOT of images. Our shutters are clicking non-stop for the entire day. This helps us to better tell the story of their day with tons of images to work from. We want every moment to be remembered because that’s what we wanted for ourselves. This is more than a full-time career for us. It’s what we live for!
Career wise, if you weren’t a photographer what would you be doing now?
Probably something not nearly as fulfilling as this job is, and probably not loving every single second of it. Honestly, we don’t want to do anything else. (Besides maybe direct a movie some day or something, as we love film).
What is something that few people know about you?
David: I’m only ever really myself when I’m around Cathy. I’m a shy extrovert which is a weird combination so I’m all talkative but it’s only because I’m so nervous. Ha!
Also, Cathy and I have the exact same degrees from Purdue, with a major in Visual Communication Design and a Minor in Creative Writing.
We both want at some point to write a novel at some point. ^_^
Cathy: When I went to Purdue, if I hadn’t gotten into the Visual Communication Design program I would have gone into my second field of choice, Astronautical Engineering. Seriously. It was close.
If you could give a couple one piece of advice when choosing a photographer what would it be?
Similar to what our friend Amanda Wilcher said in her interview, it’s so important that you get your photographer for the right reasons. Don’t let anyone but you pick out your photographer for you. Sure take into account word of mouth referrals and peoples suggestions but let it be your choice. Even if you just want a traditional, formal photographer who is only there for two hours, puts everyone in a row, with giant umbrella flash stands, make it YOUR decision (totally not us though, btw. LOL!) This is something that you’re going to have once in your entire life, that you will use to remember your wedding day forever. So make it your choice!! We never want our brides picking us because of the deal they got in one of our packages. We want our brides picking us because they are getting two awesome photographers that they love and can trust, with pictures and albums they’ll enjoy for the rest of their lives.
Anything else?
Get yourself a coordinator like April, here. It seriously makes your, and our, lives easier.
We usually end up being the unofficial wedding coordinator since we’re there all day, but it helps us if someone has that as their official job to make sure everything goes perfectly. When we know April is there we know things will be well planned and prepared and we can focus on our job of taking super-cool pictures of two people in love. ![]()
